Tan Le

Tan Le was born in Vietnam in 1977 and arrived in Australia as a refugee at four years of age.  At 15 years of age, Tan worked to help Vietnamese people in Melbourne, Victoria. At 18, she became the president of the Vietnamese Community of Footscray Association, which was established to find employment for Vietnamese Australians. 

Tan entered Melbourne’s Monash University at the age of sixteen. Awarded a KPMG Accounting Scholarship in 1997, she went on to complete a combined Bachelor of Commerce/Laws in 1998 and started her career with one of Australia's leading law firms, Freehills. Tan was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in 2000.

Tan was named Young Australian of the Year in 1998 and was voted one of Australia's 30 Most Successful Women Under 30 in that same year.

In 2000 she co-founded a wireless technology company, SASme. SASme was a pioneer in providing SMPP platforms to telecommunication carriers and content aggregators in Australia, with branches in Asia and Europe, employing 35 people. Tan was part of negotiating a successful merger for SASme in 2003.

In 2003, Tan co-founded Emotiv Systems, a neuroengineering company that has developed a breakthrough interface technology for digital media taking inputs directly from the brain.  Emotiv's vision is to revolutionize human-computer input in the same way the graphic user interface did 20 years ago. Emotiv has developed a flagship product prototype targeted at the gaming industry and is also in discussions with several key verticals such as defense, automotive, iTV, healthcare. Emotiv is a recognized world leader and pioneer in this field of brain computer interface. The company is headquartered in San Francisco and has its R&D centre located in Sydney.
Tan was a Special Visitor to the United Kingdom as a guest of the British High Commission and Foreign Commonwealth Office, a Goodwill Ambassador for Australia in Asia and is a Patron of the Australian Youth Ambassadors for Development Program. She has also been an Ambassador for the Status of Women since 2001. Tan has been appointed to a number of prominent Boards including Plan International Australia, Australian Citizenship Council, National Committee for Human Rights Education in Australia, RMIT Business in Entrepreneurship and the Centre for the Mind.

Tan’s story was featured in the Eternity Exhibition of the National Museum of Australia. Tan has been featured in "Who's Who in Australia" List  since 1999 and "Who's Who of Australian Women" List in 2007 & 2008.  Tan has been honored by the World Economic Forum as a Young Global Leader in 2009.
