About Vietnamese American National Gala (VANG)

The Vietnamese American National Gala (VANG) is a national annual celebration of Vietnamese heritage and pride, which is held in conjunction with the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, a month-long celebration in May of each year, that honors the achievements of Asian Pacific Americans and recognizes their contributions to America.

VANG is the premier Vietnamese American gathering in the nation. The black-tie dinner gala brings together nearly a thousand Vietnamese American luminaries, elected officials, corporate sponsors, and community and business leaders, to honor some of America’s best and brightest, and it is poised to be the preeminent celebration of the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

About "VANG"

The word "VÀNG", in Vietnamese, embodies several different meanings. The word "vàng" means gold, a precious and valuable element. The word "vẻ vang" means pride or to be proud of. The word "tiếng vang" denotes an accomplished individual who is recognized by many for his or her achievements. And "da vàng" is representative of the Vietnamese race, of the Vietnamese people's yellow skin color. Collectively, "VÀNG" connotes a sense of pride in the accomplishments of the Vietnamese people and a desire to inspire present and future generations to continue to contribute to the great fabric of America, a place that has become a permanent home for many Vietnamese people.

Trong tiếng Việt, chữ "VÀNG" bao hàm nhiều ý nghĩa khác nhau. Từ "vàng" có nghĩa là vàng kim, một kim lọai quí giá, đắt tiền. Từ "vẽ vang" có nghĩa hãnh diện hay tự hào. Từ "tiếng vang" có hàm ý chỉ một người thành công, được nhiều người ngưỡng mộ những thành tựu của mình. Và từ "da vàng" nói đến màu da vàng của dân tộc Việt Nam. Với tất cả những hàm ý đó, VÀNG tượng trưng cho niềm hãnh diện về những thành tựu của người Việt Nam và niềm khao khát muốn khuyến khích các thế hệ trẻ hôm nay và mai sau tiếp tục cống hiến cho Hợp Chủng Quốc Hoa Kỳ, một đất nước lý tưởng đã trở thành quê hương thứ hai của nhiều người Việt.

VANG Golden Torch Award/ Meaning of the Torch

For many refugees and immigrants, the torch signifies a sense of hope for a better life. The torch Lady Liberty holds in her hand lights the path for new people coming into America to begin a new life. The torch, moreover, is a universal symbol of education, guidance, knowledge, and illumination. The flaming torch reflects the light of knowledge and it is in the light of the torch that progress is made. In presenting the Golden Torch Award, VANG honors the awardees for their great work - for serving as pioneers in their respective fields, for guiding and inspiring others through their achievements, and for continually contributing to the advancement and betterment of America.

Đối với nhiều người tị nạn và di dân, ngọn đuốc tượng trưng cho niềm hy vọng về một cuộc sống mới. Ngọn đuốc Nữ Thần Tự Do dương cao đã soi đường cho nhiều dân tộc đến Châu Mỹ để bắt đầu một cuộc sống mới. Hơn thế nữa, ngọn đuốc là biểu tượng chung cho giáo dục, sự dìu dắt, cho kiến thức và sự khai trí. Ánh lừa đuốc tượng trưng cho ánh sáng của trí tuệ và từ trong ánh sáng trí tuệ này mà loài người tiến hóa. Qua việc trao tặng Giải Đuốc Vàng, Đại Hội Liên Hoan người Mỹ gốc Việt Toàn Quốc tuyên dương người nhận giải đã đạt được thành tựu xuất sắc, là người mở đường trong lĩnh vực nghề nghiệp hay họat động của họ, và bằng thành tựu của mình, họ đã dìu dắt và khuyến khích những người khác tiếp tục đóng góp cho sự phát triển của Hoa Kỳ.

VANG Calligraphy & Mr. Vu Hoi

The calligraphy used by the Vietnamese American National Gala is an original work of art by Calligraphy Master Vu Hoi. His brush strokes are considered to be uniquely Vietnamese. Mr. Vu is considered to be one of "Five Thousand Personalities of the World." He is an artist and poet and currently resides in Rockville, Maryland.

Kiểu chữ chính thức dùng cho tên Đại Hội Liên Hoan Người Mỹ Gốc Việt Toàn Quốc là tác phẩm nghệ thuật gốc của bậc thầy chữ viết tay Vũ Hối. Nét bút của ông là độc nhất vô nhị của Việt Nam. Ông Vũ Hối được coi là một trong "Năm Ngàn Nhân Vật Đặc Biệt trên Thế Giới." Ông là một nghệ sĩ, một nhà thơ hiện sống tại Rockville, Maryland.
